The Blogging Basics: How to Write Blogs that Rank in Google

Blog writing can be time-consuming, and it’s disappointing if your post doesn’t receive the attention it deserves. If you’re wondering how to write a blog that ranks in Google, our marketing professionals in Charleston, SC are here to help. Here are some of our favorite tips and tricks.

Using Keywords

In order to increase traffic to your website or blog, using keywords is crucial. First, you should identify which keywords resonate with your target market. Some are more competitive than others, so you should take note of how many long-tail vs. short-tail keywords to utilize. Long-tail keywords are typically three to five words, whereas short-tail keywords normally consist of one or two words. Therefore, it is easier to rank for long-tail keywords as they tend to be more specific and have a lower search volume. It is ideal to place these words within the first 100 words of a written piece. This way, Google can quickly decipher what the content consists of. However, you don’t want your content to become oversaturated. Keywords should be naturally integrated into your piece as you don’t want it to end up sounding like an advertisement.

Optimizing Content for SEO

When Google is creating its search page and forming results, it is not only looking for text. By adding keywords to the image file, alt text, and your meta description, you are increasing the potential for people to end up on your page. Describing images and summarizing your webpage gives Google a more accurate idea of the content. It is also important to keep the URL short and to the point. It is beneficial if keywords are included in the URL and it is descriptive while still being concise. There are many different tools you can use to help your article rank higher in Google and boost its SEO score. A couple of our favorites even have plug-ins so suggestions will pop up right on your screen as you are writing.

Content Ideas

It can be tricky coming up with unique yet intriguing ideas for content. You want to set yourself apart, but also write about hot topics in your industry that people will want to read about. Researching trending topics and turning them into your own detailed blog posts will give readers relevant information that will be more likely to rank in Google. Your readers want to feel confident that you are a knowledgeable source in your area of expertise. Quality and well-researched content will make them trust your company, and selecting the right topic will help.

Coming Up With a Title

Figuring out the perfect title for your blog post can be challenging. While you want to use keywords, you don’t want it to be too wordy and complex. It should feel natural, not like you’re trying to stuff too many keywords in. Usually, including numbers, a how-to guide, or an opinion-based, broad response is effective. For example, you could say “5 Ways to Rank in Google”, “How to Write Blogs that Rank in Google”, or “Why Your Blog Isn’t Ranking In Google”. Your title should be concise and engaging, including at least 2 keywords in a natural way.

Promotion

Once you’ve posted your article, you can reach out to your network and companies who might be willing to repost and promote it. You should consider reaching out to companies you may have mentioned in a post in the past, or other companies similar to yours – their audience would also benefit from your post. With other companies promoting your posts, you have the opportunity to reach a larger audience and increase your rank. You should also advertise your blog post through all of your other social media channels. People follow you for a reason and promoting the blog yourself will drive more traffic to your website.
